Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S., ranking behind only breast augmentation and nose jobs in 2012, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons®. But many patients are looking for non-surgical alternatives to eyelid surgery at my New Jersey practice.
BOTOX® Cosmetic injections can improve the look of the upper eyelids by targeting the muscles that result in crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, with results lasting up to 6 months. Combining dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, often enhances the rejuvenating effects. Although BOTOX is a common alternative I use at my New Jersey practice, other non-surgical treatments can also be effective for the eye area.
Ultherapy® uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production, which gradually produces a more lifted and youthful appearance for the eyelids. Such non-surgical treatments are excellent options for patients whose skin retains much of its elasticity and who have only moderate sagging.
However, eyelid surgery remains the most effective treatment for both sagging upper eyelids and lower eyelids with severe bags. Blepharoplasty removes excess fat, skin, and muscle, providing long-lasting results. Although eyelid surgery does require some recuperation, the recovery time is typically short and complications are rare. That’s one of the reasons it’s so popular.
