medical spa versus day spa Medical Spa vs. Day Spa
By: Jason McWhirter, M.D.

If you’re confused about the differences between a medical spa and a day spa, you’re not alone. Part of the confusion stems from the fact that there are some services that are legitimately offered in both settings. Facials and massages are good examples.

But there are certain treatments offered by day spas that you should only have performed at a medi-spa. Outside Calgary, I established the Airdrie Medical Spa to complement my medical practice. Like other medical spas, it offers procedures that include laser treatments, chemical peels, injectables, and microdermabrasion. These are all medical procedures that should be performed by a trained medical professional under a physician’s supervision.

Unfortunately, these procedures are often offered at other facilities that are not medically licensed. Some day spas, for example, offer laser hair removal or injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic that are performed by licensed cosmetologists without a physician’s supervision.

Most day spas offer valuable services, but it’s important to avoid getting medical treatments there just for the sake of value. Medical spas are the only places where you can be sure the treatments will administered safely in a manner that consistently will produce long-lasting, effective results.
