Difference between BOTOX a Whats the Difference Between BOTOX® and Dysport®?

By: Jennelle S. Williams, M.D.

Most everyone has heard of BOTOX Cosmetic, but it seems that not as many of our patients interested in getting BOTOX in the Durham area have heard of a similar wrinkle reducer option called Dysport.

Once the FDA approved BOTOX in 2002 for treating facial wrinkles, it gained widespread popularity and even became a bit of a cultural sensation after being mentioned on numerous television shows and movies. On the other hand, Dysport was widely used throughout Europe, Asia, and South America before gaining FDA approval in 2009. Other than a few years separating their FDA approvals, what’s the real difference between the 2?

Let me first explain how BOTOX and Dysport are similar. Both are facial injectables that contain proteins derived from botulinum toxin A to relax facial muscles and smooth out lines and wrinkles. Both produce results that last for about the same amount of time, usually between 3 and 4 months.

Now for the differences: BOTOX is used for tighter areas where more precision is needed, such as frown lines, while Dysport tends to spread out over a broader space, so it can be better for areas such as the forehead as a whole. Also, with BOTOX, results develop over 5 to 7 days, while Dysport gives results within a couple of days.

Both BOTOX and Dysport are minimally invasive, affordable, and have few side effects. BOTOX has a stronghold on the U.S. market for now, and it was recently approved by the FDA for use on crow’s feet (medical practitioners have safely treated this area for years and were glad to hear about the FDA’s decision). Many doctors use a combination of both injectables depending on the patient’s goals. An experienced cosmetic dermatologist can make recommendations about what will work best for you.
